Quick and Easy Self Care Ideas for Busy Moms

As busy moms, we rarely have time for ourselves. We’re constantly putting our families first. Especially the last 6 months with our children home all the time! We’re always doing things for others, and it’s important to take a moment to focus on YOU! Self care is possibly even more important for busy moms. We need it!

These easy self care ideas for busy moms are designed to help you take just a few moments a day for yourself.

I get it, it's hard to take time for yourself as a mom! These self care ideas are pretty simple and allow busy moms to implement self care. It's time to put you first! #selfcareideas #selfcareformoms #selfcareseptember

Self Care September Challenge

This month I’m hosting a Self Care September Challenge on Instagram. It’s super simple. Practice self care as often as possible. Whatever that looks like to you. Self care can be hard for busy moms! Once you do your self care for the day, post it on your Instagram stories or feed and tag me @amysbalancingact! Every tag is an entry and at the end of the month, I’m giving away a prize basket with several of my favorite self care items!

With all that being said, here are some easy self care examples to incorporate into your daily routine. It doesn’t have to take a ton of time, it just needs to be intentional time for YOU!

Easy Self Care Ideas for Busy Moms

Set a weekly intention.

At the start of each week, set an intention for the week ahead. Something that you can focus on as a goal just for you. The key is to uphold that intention every day. Some examples are I intend to:

  • stop taking things personally.
  • develop a skill and work to improve it every day.
  • create more simplicity in my life.
  • explore something I’ve never seen before.
  • gain strength mentally and physically.
  • follow the flow.

The intentions are yours, so create whatever you find appropriate and fitting for your life at the moment. Set an alarm every day with a reminder of that intention for the week and follow through!

Exercise

It’s recommended to get 30 minutes of exercise a day, so take care of you and get it done! Exercise comes in many different forms. It’s important to find something that speaks to you that encourages you to do it again and again. Check out one of these awesome at home workouts if you’re wondering where to start!

Exercise is a great way to practice self care for busy moms.

Take a relaxing bath.

I’m pretty sure every momma could use a bubble bath. Just taking some time to yourself to soak and unwind can make a world of difference. While you’re in there you can meditate, read a book, practice gratitude or empty your mind. Whatever makes you feel relaxed and at peace.

Here are a few of my favorite bath products that I use each week!

Write in a journal.

Grab a notebook or somewhere on your computer that you can go to release your thoughts. There are some amazing journaling prompts out there to help you get started each day! Here are 101 gratitude journaling prompts for moms to help you on your journaling journey!

Drink more water.

Make it a point to stay hydrated and drink more water! It’s good for you in so many different ways. Here’s a tip, shoot to drink half of your body weight in ounces as a starting goal. For example, if you weigh 160lbs, aim for 80oz of water a day! It also helps if you have a cute cup or water bottle that you can reach for beside you at all times.

Put on a face mask.

If you don’t have time for the full relaxing bath with a face mask, just go with the mask! Take care of your skin while you tend to the things you also need to get done. This Generation Clay purple mask is my favorite. It lasts forever, so it’s worth the price. Plus since it’s a clay mud mask, you don’t have to worry about the paper sheet slipping around while you get things done or relax outside of the bath.

Go on a walk.

This kind of ties back into the exercise suggestion and walking is absolutely exercise. But sometimes, a walk is more than just exercise. It’s a chance for you to spend time alone with your thoughts or time to listen to your favorite podcast. It can also be time spent catching up with a friend. Walking is good for the soul and a great chance to take time for you!

Have a treat.

Maybe one of the easiest self care ideas for busy moms to give into. Eat that cupcake momma! We all need to indulge every once in a while.

Meditate

Take some time to focus on your breathing and calm your mind. You can find some meditation prompts and videos on YouTube to help you get started. Here are some short meditations for moms!

Read a book just for fun.

You know you want to! Pick up a book you’ve been wanting to read and spend some time getting into it. You can also do this during your bubble bath!

Self care for busy moms - skincare

Take care of your skin.

Start a skincare routine if you don’t already have one. Wash your face every day and find a few products that can help take care of your skin. Remember the more you do now, the better your skin will be as you age! These are a few of my favorite products.

Hyaluronic Acid | Retinol Serum | Daily Moisturizer | Facial Spray | Makeup Eraser | Facial Toner | Micellar Cleansing Water | Face Wash | Detoxifying Clay Mask

Put on makeup just to feel good.

Don’t put makeup on because you think you have to or you have somewhere to go. Do it just you want to! Try a new product or new technique that you’ve had your eye on and go for it.

Have some quiet rest time just for you.

Can I get an amen? I know this is hard to come by for us moms, but if you get a few minutes of quiet and rest to recharge that’s a win. If you’re extra lucky, try to squeeze in a nap or watch a show just for you.

Start a new hobby or learn a new skill.

Dying to learn how to crochet or do calligraphy? Wanting to start a garden in your backyard? Take the time to learn a new skill or start a hobby. As moms we let our family become our hobby. Toting our kids around and keeping life on track are some of our top skills. Find something just for you!

Practice yoga.

Go to a class or find one on YouTube. Here are some 15-20 minute beginner yoga workouts to get you started. Now find a quiet place and give it a try!

Spend time with friends.

Friends are so important as a mom. Take the time to see your friends. Schedule a dinner date or go for a walk to catch up with each other!

Do a brain dump.

Feeling overwhelmed with everything going on inside your head? Grab a blank sheet of paper and dump it all out. Writing down everything running through your mind helps you prioritize what’s important and weed out what doesn’t matter. It’s a way to organize your brain!

Set screen time limits.

Not just for the kids, do it for you! Take some time away from social media and stop reading the new. Set an amount of time to be on the screen a day or practice putting your phone away every evening after dinner.

Get a manicure, pedicure or massage.

I realize that the above options are a bit pricier and require you to get out of the house, but every once in a while, splurge on yourself! It doesn’t have to be monthly, just once in a blue moon treat yourself to something special that is wonderful and relaxing.

Say “no” to something you don’t want to do.

You don’t have to be a yes man. Say no when you don’t want to or don’t feel like you have the time. Do you have trouble saying no? Check out learning to say no and why it’s okay!

Go to bed early or sleep in late.

I am personally the go to bed early type, but take some extra time for sleep. You NEED it. Literally a little extra sleep is actually one of the best things you can do for yourself!

A few other self care ideas for busy moms to get your mind working.

  • Color in an adult coloring book.
  • Spend time outside with nature.
  • Go on a bike ride.
  • Grab a coffee and drink it in the coffee shop or outside.
  • Get your hair done.
  • Declutter a space in your home.
  • Redecorate a space or change the decor with the season.
  • Delete emails in your inbox.
  • Let go of expectations.
  • Try something you’ve always wanted to do.
  • Go for a long drive.
  • Listen to a podcast.
  • Work on a puzzle.

Tips for starting a self care routine.

1. Start small.

You don’t have to spend an hour each day, just a few intentional minutes a day will do wonders. Once you create a habit of self care, you may chose to do more. It’s all about finding what works for you.

2. It doesn’t have to be expensive.

You don’t have to spend money at all! Several of the items above are FREE. It’s not all about pedicures and massages. Walking, writing what you’re grateful for or soaking in the bath are all wonderful and pretty much free.

3. Find things that you enjoy.

It’s self care after all, so find a form of it that brings you joy. It’s shouldn’t be a chore, but instead, something you look forward to.

4. Don’t give up on yourself.

If you find it’s been a while since you’ve focused on you. Reset. Recharge and start again. YOU are worth every second of self care. You are worth more than you know and deserve to treat yourself, so don’t feel guilty or give up!
