Where are my Harry Potter fans at? This butterbeer puppy chow recipe is sure to delight anyone still waiting on their letter from Hogwarts!
Even if you haven’t read a single Harry Potter book or seen the movies, you’ll probably still love the fall flavors in this sweet treat. I’m not saying that the flavors are irresistible, but you’ll likely be unable to stop grabbing a few every time you walk by the bowl! It’s a blessing and a curse.
Introducing Butterbeer Puppy Chow

This is a fun, fall twist on the original puppy chow recipe that many know and love. I personally love making puppy chow and coming up with new flavors. It’s so easy and incredibly addicting!
Speaking of puppy chow, do you call it puppy chow or muddy buddies? I grew up calling it puppy chow, but I know many people call it muddy buddies. It’s also been known as monkey munch, muddy munch, reindeer chow, or even doggy bag!
Fun fact: This delicious treat is thought to have originated in the midwest and was called puppy chow because it resembles dog kibble!
How to Make Butterbeer Puppy Chow
Just like the original, it’s pretty simple. Take a peek at the ingredients and directions below.
Ingredients
- 9 cups of Chex cereal
- 1 bag (12oz) of butterscotch chips
- 1/2 cup almond butter
- 1 tsp imitation butter extract
- 1 bag marshmallows
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- Lightening bolt, Fall or House colored sprinkles (optional)

Directions
(You can also see the recipe card below for details)
- Measure Chex cereal into a large mixing bowl and set aside.
- Melt the butterscotch chips, peanut butter, and vanilla extract over low heat until melted.
- Remove from heat and pour the melted mixture over Chex cereal. Mix until all the cereal is fully coated.
- Pour the coated cereal into a gallon-size baggie and add in marshmallows and powdered sugar.
- Shake the mixture until the cereal is coated to your liking. Feel free to add more powdered sugar if you want! Some prefer closer to 2 cups of powdered sugar, but I prefer less.
- Pour out the mixture over wax or parchment paper to dry.
- (Optional) Add fall sprinkles to spice it up. I used these!
- Let it dry for 30 minutes to an hour then combine everything into one large bowl and enjoy!
It really is as simple as that.
Alternative Heating Method
Better yet, if you don’t want to or are unable to melt your butterscotch candies on the stove, you can also microwave them. Be sure to use a microwave-safe bowl, preferably glass, and heat the chips in 30-second increments. After each heating period, stir the chips. Repeat the heating and stirring process until smooth.
